Interview with a vampire
Ask Robert Pattinson how he’s handling the global hysteria that now surrounds him and he says: “All right, I hope.” Then he runs his hand through that tousled mop of his (a sign that he’s anxious) and adds: “It’s still sort of new.”
It’s almost 12 months since the first Twilight film was unleashed on the world. Twelve months since we clapped eyes on the sensitive, tortured and fiercely handsome vampire named Edward Cullen from Stephenie Meyer’s massively popular novels. Twelve months since Pattinson, the 23-year-old British actor who plays the red-blooded teenage vamp, became an international heart-throb.
One minute he has a bit part in two Harry Potter films (he played Cedric Diggory in The Goblet of Fire and The Order of the Phoenix). The next he’s the object of every teenage girl’s affections. They’re screaming right now outside his hotel room. He’s in France to promote The Twilight Saga: New Moon , the follow-up to Twilight (there are four novels in all). Whenever he goes near the window to smoke, a crescendo of noise erupts from the street below.
“To be honest, I still don’t really understand what’s going on,” he says. “Like yesterday, I was having lunch down the road. We were in this place for a couple of hours and suddenly there was like 400 people outside on the street. It was just so nuts and it’s like that all the time now.”
If Pattinson hasn’t come to grips with the global hysteria by now, how will he cope when New Moon is released next month?
“When the second one comes out, then I’ll see how I am. Mostly I can ignore things to quite a big extent and kind of pretend they’re not really happening,” he says, sounding eerily calm.
“I just don’t take any of it seriously. It’s just a job and while it’s a job I love, girls scream out for Edward, not Robert. I still can’t get a date.”
Pattinson has been peddling this line for months. He won’t fess up to dating Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart, who plays Bella. Perhaps he’s under studio instructions to appear single? It probably boosts ticket sales.
The real reason Pattinson is so calm is simple: “I’m not the lead in the second film. Taylor [Lautner] is.” He grins idiotically. “I appear in Bella’s dreams. So I’m in it but the focus is not on me. I just have significant moments at the beginning … and the end. So I’m more of a supporting role in this one, which is why I felt so free. I didn’t have to deal with any of the bullshit of the first one. I don’t have to hold the movie or worry about the fans. I think I did it better without all those pressures.”
Pattinson is extraordinarily beautiful. He’s been called the Johnny Depp of his generation and been crowned Sexiest Man on the Planet by Glamour magazine, Top Hunk by Entertainment Tonight and Hottest Actor by Rolling Stone.
Like Depp, he has the same asymmetrical beauty, the same gorgeous man-boy face. He’s 185 centimetres tall, lean and he, too, exudes a masculine femininity. Depp also started out as a teenage idol before he began furiously deconstructing that image. Ditto for Pattinson.
“After Harry Potter I could have done a lot more teen movies,” he says.
Instead he starred as a young Salvador Dali who has a bromance with poet Federico Garcia Lorca in this year’s Little Ashes.
“I had to do all these hardcore gay sex scenes, when I haven’t even had a sex scene with a girl in a film yet,” he laughs.
“I’m lining up so many different films so it’ll be harder to just label me the vampire guy.”
Those include Remember Me, with Aussie beauty Emilie de Ravin from Lost, and Unbound Captives, a western set in 1859, which stars Hugh Jackman – but more on that later.
Before Twilight, Pattinson was on the verge of quitting the acting game in favour of music. “With acting, a lot of the time you’re doing scenes you don’t really relate to and you don’t really know why you’re being cast half the time,” he laughs. He “understood” music. He’s been playing the piano since he was five. He composes and sings. It’s second nature. Acting isn’t. He still feels “awkward in front of a camera”.
Pattinson has a lovely voice and performed two songs in Twilight – something he now regrets. “When the first film came out I felt like a complete tosser,” he says. “It looked like I was trying to be cool or something, like Eminem. You know, be in a movie and then do a song for the soundtrack. But I didn’t look cool, I just looked ridiculous.”
Pattinson’s lack of self-confidence is staggering yet endearing. Compliment his singing and he’ll change the subject. Compliment his performance and he’ll tell you you’re bonkers. But he’ll stick to acting for now only because he’d “starve to death” as a musician.
Pattinson has two older sisters – Lizzy, a musician, who’s in the band Aurora; and Victoria, who’s in advertising. His father imported classic cars and his mother worked for a modelling agency. It was his father who encouraged him to pursue acting (to meet girls). So he modelled, did some amateur theatre and British television.
But now he has to go. A plane is waiting. He yawns and looks tired. So how does he unwind?
“I don’t really need to do stuff to relax or get away because all my interests are part of my job,” he says. “Like I’ll watch movies to be inspired to do other movies. I read books to be inspired. I listen to music to be inspired to write music. Everything I do is to create something.”
Pattinson’s next film is Unbound Captives. He met Jackman in Japan recently for a little bonding ahead of the film. “We went karaoke singing,” he laughs. “We were singing Abba songs, it was pretty funny. It was sort of an Abba song sing-off, you know, last man standing.”
Who won? “I think he did, only because he can drink more than me and still sing in tune. He’s a cool guy and I’m really looking forward to that film.”
So are we. The Sexiest Man Alive meets the Sexiest Man on the Planet – now that should be interesting.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon opens on November 19.
NOTES
Pattinson chain-smokes during the interview. About halfway through, he runs out of cigarettes. He decides to pop out into the hallway to see whether he can “bum” one from a passing hotel guest. When the French hotel staff, who are normally cool, calm and collected, lay eyes on him, they turn into an adoring mass of autograph-seeking fans. Pattinson has to make a quick dash back to the safety of the room. He’s clearly unnerved by the run-in.

Bitten by the Twilight craze
Here’s a great article from the Globe and Mail focusing on the fans dedication to all things Twilight and how the internet plays into the Twilight Craze.
If you’re a Vancouverite who wouldn’t have known a few weeks ago who actor Robert Pattinson was if he came up and bit you in the neck, chances are that’s changed in the last while. Pattinson and his Twilight vampire saga co-stars (Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, et al.) have been in and around the city filming Twilight: Eclipse – the third instalment in the movie series – and bloodthirsty bloggers and celebrity gossip sites have been sucking it all up.
“Kellan Lutz on His Way Back to Vancouver, with Teddy Grahams!” gushed the Eclipse website this week, sparking a deluge of photos of Lutz, mid-sweaty gym workout sans shirt, or “Robsten” (yes, that’s Pattinson and Stewart) stepping out together on fan sites such as robertpattinsondaily.org and bellaandedward.com.
“I’m not sure I can even describe how much interest there is,” says Molly Goodson, editor of the San Francisco-based celebrity gossip site PopSugar. “I’ve been working on celebrity stuff for about four years and it’s by far the biggest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s crazy.”
The Twilight films are based on Stephenie Meyer’s novels of the same name about the vampire Edward (Pattinson) and Bella (Stewart), the human teen who falls for him. The novels were bestsellers before they hit the big screen, but the films have turned the Twilight industry into an even larger phenomenon – fuelling a staggering interest in the stars.
“Any and every photo – it doesn’t matter how bad it is, it doesn’t matter how little you can see of the people, the fans want to see everything and they will look at every single photo all day long,” says Goodson.
To say the photos are good for driving traffic to the websites is an understatement.
“I think there’s probably more interest in this film than any other,” says Adam Nutburn, whose U.K.-based site Showbiz Spy posts daily updates on the stars in Vancouver. “It’s constant.”
Nutburn says most of his tips come from people working on-set. They, of course, request anonymity.
The production company has tried to keep filming sites under wraps, but when word of a location spreads (at a North Vancouver park, Port Moody’s Old City Hall), it can be mayhem, with hysterical fans showing up en masse. Some of those fans have travelled great distances – sometimes from other countries – to Vancouver in the hopes of seeing Pattinson, Stewart, Lutz (Emmett) or Lautner (Jacob) in the flesh. These pilgrimages are likely to continue until late next month, when shooting wraps up.
On Twitter, fans tweet about sightings. On Wednesday, when word emerged about a minor accident involving actor Jackson Rathbone (Jasper) during a fight-scene rehearsal, the news spread in minutes.
“We’ve never seen this level of interest by the public in something that’s filming in British Columbia,” says B.C. Film Commissioner Susan Croome, who adds that, frankly, it worries her. “I think there’s always a concern about safety when you have large numbers of people gathering in an area that is effectively a production zone. People are moving around a lot, there’s heavy equipment, there’s vehicles, there’s a lot of elements, and so safety is always an issue on a film set. And when you have people that are keen to see what’s going on and maybe not part of the process it’s always a concern.”
There’s safety – and then there’s showbiz snitches. Some of the tips Goodson receives have to do with the film’s content. And, like Showbiz Spy, Goodson says PopSugar is getting some of that information directly from the set.
“I think that they try really hard to keep that set as closely guarded as possible. They have the cast sworn to secrecy about everything and they try to have the set sworn to secrecy about everything, but there’s a lot of people working on that movie and there’s a lot of opportunities out there for them to leak information and that’s how it gets out.
“Luckily for the franchise … it doesn’t seem to lessen anybody’s interest in it. It’s not like they get the scoop and they’re like, ‘Oh, I don’t need to watch the movie now.’ They just want to watch it more.”
Harper’s Bazaar: New shoot and interview but no Robsten “tell-all”.
Pop Crunch stirs the masses with this revealing bit of gossip on the upcoming issue of Harpers Bazaar.
Robsten are sharing their love — on and off the set. Twilight stars Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will reportedly go public with their clandestine romance in a revealing interview on the pages of the Dec. issue of Harper’s Bazaar Magazine. The tell-all interview with confirm months of speculaton romantically-linking the young stars of the wildy-successful vampire francise, insiders reveal in the Oct. 5 edition of In Touch Weekly. “Rob and Kristen were relatively open about their relationship,” says a Harper’s employee who accompanied the couple to an Aug. 20 photoshoot for the magazine.
But Gossip Cop.com quickly puts a squash on any romance revealing revelations. Putting it straight there will be no public “I Love You’s” for our favorite “are they or aren’t they” couple. Good News though we have a new interview and photoshoot in our future!
Today’s “Twilight” rumor has Robsten watchers on the edge of their seats. Sites are picking up a sizzling In Touch magazine claim that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart will “go public with their clandestine romance in a revealing interview” in this December’s edition of Harper’s Bazaar. “Insiders” tell the tabloid that the “tell-all interview” will confirm months of speculation that the co-stars are a real-life couple. An employee for Harper’s who “accompanied the couple” to a photoshoot last month supposedly says, “Rob and Kristen were relatively open about their relationship.” Here’s what Gossip Cop can confirm – the stars DID shoot, in Vancouver, a big feature story that as of now is slated for the magazine’s December cover. But a source close to the production tells Gossip Cop exclusively that Pattinson and Stewart “do NOT” discuss whether or not they’re a couple. Do NOT. So there you have it. You heard it here first.

Robert is “Homeless Chic”
Donna Peerce at The Examiner looks at the effect Robert and friends have had on the fashion trends.
Rob Pattinson, Bobby Long and Marcus Foster bring back “Homeless Chic” as the new “black” for fall
For the most part, fashion trends reflect what is happening in the wider world; nothing greater highlights this than the effect the economic bubbles of the 1920s and 1990s had upon fashion. In 2009, we’re faced with much the same issues: economic problems. Fortunately, some of the young British stars of today – Rob Pattinson and friends, Bobby Long and Marcus Foster – are telling the young men of the world that it’s O.K. to look poor. Everyone – whether rich or poor, famous or unknown, can look the same and it’s tres cheap.
So, young men, hang up your tuxedos and suits. Fold away those khaki pants and preppy blue and pink shirts. Dig out your old holey, ripped, worn-out jeans, t-shirts of any kind, (preferably with holes), plaid shirts – preferably missing a couple of buttons, those stacks of hoodies, and oversized ratty-tatty sweaters. Look for old beanies and baseball caps and get ready for fall with the new “Homeless Chic” look.
While on a recent U.S. tour, Marcus Foster, one of Britain’s “on the brink of stardom” musicians/singer/songwriters tweeted that he shopped at the Salvation Army on 99-cent Wednesday and bought a thousand shirts. Meanwhile, Rob Pattinson told his Twilight director, Catherine Hardwicke, that he had to borrow one of Marcus Foster’s plaid shirts (well-worn and comfy) to wear to the Teen Choice Awards because all of his were dirty. Paired with jeans and a casual jacket with his famous haystacky, lackadaisical hair, Pattinson was chic and trendy at the awards show.Meanwhile, Bobby Long has been seen performing throughout the U.S. in his plaid shirts and cut jeans with long, swooping hair over his eyes and a day or two-old beard scruffing up his cheeks. The only way to describe these young guys’ styles is to say “Homeless Chic.” And is it ever popular. Even London’s dapper Prince William has been seen wearing a scruffy beard as if he, too, is following the “Homeless Chic” look.
The death of the dress code factors in on this new wave of British-wear throughout England and the U.S. as sported by Rob Pattinson, Marcus Foster and friends. Young American and Brit adults simply don’t care about those preppy clothes of yesteryear. They don’t really care what they’re wearing, which makes it even cooler. They want to be comfortable and they’ll wear these clothes until they literally fall apart. Case in point: If you walk into any Abercrombie & Fitch store, you’ll see racks and racks of cut jeans, torn t-shirts, hoodies, and torn jackets. You’ll see plaid, plaid, plaid. Red, yellow, blue, brown, black. Throw in some huge neck scarves, and you’ve got chic, trendy and beautiful.
The British “Homeless Chic” look has even inspired another style – the Goth Ninja look. The figure- hugging, black clad youths are perhaps the biggest consumers of the lesser celebrated designers. They’ve moved away from logos and most big name Parisian and Milanese designers and reverted back to the more “Homeless Chic” look of Rob Pattinson and his friends. And designers are taking notice. They’re bringing back grungy fashion looks with boyish flannel shirts and unkempt ripped jeans at the moment.
Actually, this “Homeless Chic” is not a “new” look at all. For a few years, there have been fitted, checked, button-down shirts and torn jeans in stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and American Eagle, which means there’s a grunge element to young adult fashion every season. But, it’s even more rampant this year. And the writing is on the wall when you see grunge looks in haute couture and prêt porter collections. It’s not long before trends fizzle down to fashion-forward boutiques and chain stores, and before we know it, it’s mainstream fashion. This is what’s happening now with the “Homeless Chic” look of Rob Pattinson and his buddies. They’re becoming the trendy, “must-have” look.
Trends seem to repeat themselves every 20 to 30 years which means that the 90’s inspired fashions are next on the list. Old trends are always reinterpreted and become improved modern incarnations. Like the slogan on a Volkswagen Beetle commercial, “If you’re good in a past life, you come back as something better.” Rob Pattinson and his friends are making this reincarnation of grunge and “Homeless Chic” even better.
